Mitsubishi FX2N-485-BD+ RS485 Board

Introduction to Mitsubishi FX2N-485-BD+

The communication board FX2N-485-BD for RS485 (hereinafter referred to as “485BD”) can be connected to the base unit of the FX2N Series programmable controller to be used for the following applications.
1) Data transfer using no protocol
Data communication with diversified RS232C units including personal computers, bar code readers and printers can be performed via the RS485 (422) converter using the no protocol. In this application, data is sent or received using the data registers specified by the RS instruction. For the setting and program examples, refer to the FX Programming Manual and FX Communication User’s Manual.
2) Data transfer using the dedicated protocol
Data transfer with RS485 (422) units can be performed on the 1:N basis using the dedicated protocol.
For the contents of the dedicated protocol used in this application, refer to the FX Communication User’s Manual.
3) Data transfer using the parallel link
Data transfer with an FX2N programmable controller can be performed on the 1:1 basis for 100 auxiliary relays and 10 data registers. For the setting and program examples, refer to the FX Communication User’s Manual.
4) Data transfer using the N:N network
Data transfer with FX2N programmable controllers can be performed on the N:N basis. For the setting,the number of transferred data and program examples, refer to the FX Communication User’s Manual.

2.2  Cable and Terminal Resistor to connect the RS485 FX2N-485-BD+


2.2.1 Cable to connect Mistubishi FX2N-485-BD+
To connect the RS485 (422) unit, use a shielded twisted-pair cable.
The cable specification must be AWG 26 to 16, and the maximum tightening torque must be 0.6 N·m (6 kgf·cm). If a cable other than the AWG 26 to 16 is used, normal communication cannot be assured because the terminal may be imperfectly contacted. It is recommended to insert a cable integrated by the crimping tool into the terminal.


2.2.2 Terminal Resistor of Mistubishi FX2N-485-BD+
Provide the terminal resistor at both ends of the line as described in section 2.3.2 and 2.3.3.
1) In the case of two-pair wiring, connect the terminal resistor (330W, 1/4W) between terminals SDA and SDB as well as between terminals RDA and RDB.

Use the resistors offered as accessories of the 485BD.
2) In the case of one-pair wiring, connect the terminal resistor (110W, 1/2W)between terminals RDA and RDB. Use the resistors offered as accessories of the 485BD.

2.3 Wiring of Mitsubishi FX2N-485-BD+


2.3.1 Selection of Wiring of Mistubishi FX2N-485-BD+
Wiring of RS485 is one-pair wiring or two-pair wiring. The wiring method is decided according to the
usage. Please select the wiring method from the table below.

*1 When this product is added to the system, please match the wiring to the wiring method of the system.
*2 When using 485BD with, this wiring method remember to take account of/or ignore the “echo” of the commands sent from the FX2N programmable controller.
*3 Use FX2N programmable controller and 485BD together.
*4 For excluding the combination of 485BD, please see below.

2.3.2 Two-pair Wiring

*1 R is the terminating resistance. Connect the terminating resistance (330W) between terminals SDA and SDB, and terminals RDA and RDB.
*2 The shield of the shielded twisted-pair cable must be connected to ground (100W or less). When using parallel link, ground both side. When using no protocol or dedicated protocol, ground one side.
*3 Connect terminal FG to each terminal of the programmable controller main body grounded with resistance of 100 or less. However, for the computer link unit of the A series programmable controller, see the manual of the computer link unit.
*4 When using RS232/485 or RS232/422 interface, please the use FX-485PC-IF.

 

2.3.3 One-pair Wiring

*1 R is the terminating resistance. Connect the terminating resistance (110W) between terminals RDA and RDB.
*2 The shield of the shielded twisted-pair cable must be connected to ground (100W or less). When using parallel link, ground both side. When using no protocol or dedicated protocol, ground one side.
*3 Connect terminal FG to each terminal of the programmable controller main body grounded with resistance of 100 or less. However, for the computer link unit of the A series programmable controller, see the manual of the computer link unit.

DIAGNOSTICS of Mitsubishi FX2N-485-BD+

For error code of N:N network and computer link, refer to the FX Communication User’s Manual.


4.1 Common Items
1) Check the connection with the communication unit of the programmable controller and the wiring.
When the connection is unstable, the communication can not be corrected.
2) Check whether the VRRD or VRSC instruction is used in used in the program.
If it is used, delete it, turn off the power of the programmable controller, then turn it on again.
3) Each setting of communication format (D8120), parameter of programmable controller by FX-PCS/WIN-E, N:N network (D8173 to D8180) and parallel link (M8070, M8071) is suitable for the usage or it checks. The communication is not correctly done if setting is not suitable for the usage.
When each setting is changed, please turn off the power supply of the programmable controller, and turn it on again.
4) When you use FX0N-485ADP or FX-485ADP in network, please the power supply for the drive must be supplied correctly or check.


4.2 LED Check Items of Mitsubishi FX2N-485-BD+
4.2.1 N:N Network
1) Check the status of the RD LED and the SD LED provided on each 485BD.
- If both of them are lit and extinguished, nothing is wrong.
- If the RD LED is lit/extinguished but the SD LED is not lit/extinguished (not lit at all), check the setting of the station No.,the baud rate (transmission rate) and the total number of salve stations.
- If the RD LED is not lit/extinguished, check the wiring.
2) Make sure that the communication error (FX2N: M8183 to M8190, FX0N: M504 to M511) in each slave station is not turned on and that the data communication flag (FX2N: M8191, FX0N: M503) is not turned off. When one of the communication error flag is turned on or if the data communication flag is turned off, check the error code of data registers (FX2N: D8211 to D8218, FX0N: D211 to D218).

For the error code, please see the FX Communication User’s Manual. 

 

4.3 Parallel Link
1) Check the status of the RD(RXD) LED and the SD(TXD) LED provided on each communication unit.
- If both of them are lit and extinguished, nothing is wrong.
- If the RD(RXD) LED is lit/extinguished but the SD(TXD) LED is not lit/extinguished (not lit at all),check the setting of the master station and the slave stations.
- If the RD(RXD) LED is not lit/extinguished, check the wiring.
2) Make sure that the master station and the slave stations are set correctly. If the setting is incorrect,correct it.
3) Make sure that the devices for the master station and the slave stations are handled correctly. If they are handled incorrectly, correct the program so that they are handled correctly.


4.4 Computer Link
1) Check the status of the RD(RXD) LED and the SD(TXD) LED provided on each communication unit.
- If both of them are lit and extinguished, nothing is wrong.
- If the RD(RXD) LED is lit/extinguished but the SD(TXD) LED is not lit/extinguished (not lit at all),check the setting of the station No. and the transmission rate (baud rate).
- If the RD(RXD) LED is not lit/extinguished, check the wiring and confirm the connection with the programmable controller.
2) Make sure that the communication procedure is performed correctly. If it is not performed correctly,correct the setting in the computer.
3) Check the NAK error code and programmable controller error code.
For the error code, please see the FX Communication User’s Manual.

 

4.5 RS Instruction
1) Check the status of the RD (RXD) LED and the SD (TXD) LED provided in an optional equipment.
- If the RD (RXD) LED is not lit while data is received or the SD (TXD) LED is not lit while data is sent, check the installation and the wiring.
- When the RD (RXD) LED is lit while data is received or the SD (TXD) LED is lit while data is sent, the installation and the wiring are correct.
2) Make sure the timing of data send/receive. For example, make sure that the counterpart equipment is ready for receive before starting to send data to it.
3) When the terminator is not used, check whether the send data capacity is equivalent to the acceptable data capacity. If the send data capacity may be changed, use the terminator.
4) Make sure that the external equipment is correctly operating.
5) Check whether the type of send data and the type of receive data are equivalent. If they are different,make them equivalent.
6) When two or more RS instructions are used in the program, make sure that only one RS instruction is actuated in one operation cycle. Never turn off the RS instruction while data is received or sent.
7) In the FX2N Series (V2.00 or later), an RS instruction is not executed if the counterpart equipment receives “NAK”.
Arrange the system so that the RS instruction is executed even if the counterpart equipment receives “NAK”.

Installation of Mitsubishi FX3U-CNV-BD

• Cut off all phases of the power source externally before starting the installation or wiring work, thus avoiding electric shock or damages to the product.

• Use the product in the environment within the general specifications described in PLC main unit manual (Hardware Edition).
Never use the product in areas with dust, oily smoke, conductive dusts, corrosive gas (salt air, Cl2, H2S, NH3, SO2, or NO2), flammable gas, vibrations or impacts, or expose it to high temperature, condensation, or wind and rain.If the product is used in such a place described above, electrical shock, fire,malfunction, damage, or deterioration may be caused.
• Use screwdrivers carefully when performing installation work, thus avoiding accident or product damage.
• When drilling screw holes or wiring, cutting chips or wire chips should not enter ventilation slits.Such an accident may cause fire, failure or malfunction.
• Do not touch the conductive parts of the product directly, thus avoiding failure or malfunction.
• Fix the expansion board securely to the specified connector. Incorrect connection may cause malfunction.

The following explains the installation method to FX3U/FX3UC Series PLC (FX3U Series PLC is used for the following example).
For removing and installing details, refer to the PLC main unit manual.
However, FX3UC Series PLC manual is only available in Japanese.

 

2.1 Installation Method of Mitsubishi FX3U-CNV-BD

• Refer to the procedure 2) for configuring a new system.
• Refer to the procedure 1) for adding product to an existing system.
1) Power off the PLC.
Disconnect all the cables connected to the PLC.
Dismount the PLC from the DIN rail.
2) Using a flat blade screwdriver as shown in the right figure, lift the little dummy expansion board cover (right fig. A). Do not damage the circuit board or electronic parts.
3) Remove the dummy expansion board cover (right fig. A) in a parallel motion away from the main unit.
4) Make sure the expansion board (right fig. B) is in parallel with the main unit (right fig. C) and fix it to the expansion board connector.
5) Fix the expansion board (right fig. B) to the main unit using the M3 tapping screws of the provided (right fig. D).
Tighten to a torque: 0.3 to 0.6 N⋅m

1) Power off the PLC.
2) Connect the USB (MINI B plug male) connector of the USB cable to the FX3U-USB-BD.
3) Connect the USB (A plug male) connector of the USB cable to the personal computer.
4) Turn ON the power supply of the PLC.
5) Turn ON the power supply of the personal computer.
6. Driver Installation
Procedure for installing the driver is explained below.
Windows XP installation follows.
• Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows Millennium Edition, and Windows2000, the installation method will vary.
Installation of the driver is canceled during the following process, the installation is not carried out correctly.
If the installation is canceled, uninstall the driver and install again.
Please refer to Chapter 8 for instructions on uninstalling the driver.
Please install the driver with the following procedure.
1)When the USB cable is connected to the personal computer, the following screen is displayed.When the USB cable is connected to the personal computer, the following screen is displayed.

Click [ Finish ].
The installation of the USB driver software will finish.
- If Windows 98, Windows 98SE or Windows Millennium Edition is used,installation of the USB Serial Port software begins, and ends automatically.
The CD-ROM can be removed from the personal computer at this time.
- If using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, proceed to step 4).

4) The following screen is displayed.

Click [ Next > ].
The installation of the USB Serial Port software will begin.
- If using Windows 2000, a screen to select the location of the installation files is displayed.
Please select the CD-ROM drive.
5) The screen of 2) is displayed. (Only in Windows XP)
Click [ Continue Anyway ].

The installation of the USB Serial Port software will finish.
The CD-ROM (USB driver software) can be removed from the personal computer at this time.

INSTALLATION PRECAUTIONS of Mitsubishi FX3U-485-BD

• Cut off all phases of the power source externally before starting the installation or wiring work, thus avoiding electric shock or damages to the product.

• Use the product in the environment within the general specifications described in PLC main unit manual (Hardware Edition).
Never use the product in areas with dust, oily smoke, conductive dusts, corrosive gas (salt air, Cl2, H2S, NH3, SO2, or NO2), flammable gas, vibrations or impacts, or expose it to high temperature, condensation, or wind and rain.If the product is used in such a place described above, electrical shock, fire,malfunction, damage, or deterioration may be caused.
• Use screwdrivers carefully when performing installation work, thus avoiding accident or product damage.
• When drilling screw holes or wiring, cutting chips or wire chips should not enter ventilation slits.Such an accident may cause fire, failure or malfunction.
• Do not touch the conductive parts of the product directly, thus avoiding failure or malfunction.
• Fix the expansion board securely to the specified connector. Incorrect connection may cause malfunction.

 

The following explains the installation method to FX3U/FX3UC Series PLC (FX3U Series PLC is used for the following example).
For removing and installing details, refer to the PLC main unit manual. However, FX3UC Series PLC manual is only available in Japanese.

 

2.1 Installation Method of Mitsubishi FX3U-485-BD

• Refer to the procedure 2) for configuring a new system.
• Refer to the procedure 1) for adding product to an existing system.
1) Power off the PLC.
Disconnect all the cables connected to the PLC.
Dismount the PLC from the DIN rail.
2) Using a flat blade screwdriver as shown in the right figure, lift the little dummy expansion board cover (right fig. A). Do not damage the circuit board or electronic parts.
3) Remove the dummy expansion board cover (right fig. A) in a parallel motion away from the main unit.
4) Make sure the expansion board (right fig. B) is in parallel with the main unit (right fig. C) and fix it to the expansion board connector.
5) Fix the expansion board (right fig. B) to the main unit using the M3 tapping screws of the provided (right fig. D).
Tighten to a torque: 0.3 to 0.6 N⋅m

Mitsubishi FX1N-485-BD RS485 interface Board

Introduction to Mitsubishi FX1N-485-BD

The RS-485 communication board FX1N-485-BD (hereafter referred to as "485BD") is connected to the FX1S/FX1N Series PLC basic unit, and available for the applications described below.
Only one function expansion board can be connected to one PLC basic unit. Accordingly, the 485BD cannot be used together with the FX1N-422-BD or the FX1N-232-BD.

 

1.1 Features of Mitsubishi FX1N-485-BD
1) Data transfer function using the non-procedure method.
The 485BD transfers the data using the RS instruction between a bar code reader, personal computer or printer.
As the 485BD is not equipped with buffer memory, it sends and receives the data using data registers specified by the RS instruction.
For the RS instruction and the communication setting, refer to the FX Series Communication User’s Manual.
2) Data transfer function using a dedicated protocol.
The 485BD transfers the data when a personal computer directly specifies devices of the PLC.
For the dedicated protocol and the communication setting, refer to the FX Series Communication User’s Manual.
3) Parallel link function.
The 485BD transfers automatically 50 auxiliary relays and 10 data registers when two FX1S Series PLC’s (two FX1N Series PLC’s) are connected on a one-to-one basis.
For the setting procedure and program examples, refer to the FX Series Communication User’s Manual.
4) Easy PC link function.
The 485BD transfers automatically up to 64 auxiliary relays and 8 data registers when up to eight FX1S/FX1N/FX0N/FX2N/FX2NC Series PLC units are connected. For the setting procedure and program examples, refer to the FX Series Communication User’s Manual. For the FX2N Series PLC, the version should be 2.00 or greater (manufacturer’s serial No. 780000 or later).

• Plug the communication board A) in to the connector B).
• Fix the board to the basic unit with two M3 screws C). (Tightening torque: 0.3 to 0.6 Nxm)
• Remove the top cover of the basic unit, and attach the top cover for board D) instead.
During attachment, remove D)’ with a nipper, etc. so that the connector of the board is exposed.
• Fix the top cover with the M3 screw E). (Tightening torque: 0.3 to 0.6 Nxm)
• When the FX1N-5DM is used also, refer to the handy manual offered with the FX1S/FX1N Series PLC main unit.
• Only one function expansion board is available for one FX1S/FX1N Series PLC basic unit. Never stack up two or more function expansion boards. (Even if they are stacked up, they do not function at all.)

Introduction to Mitsubishi FX2N-422-BD

The FX2N-422-BD for RS422 communication board (422BD) can be connected to an FX2N Series programmable
controller, and used as a port for programming and monitoring tools.
When the 422BD is used, two DU Series units can be connected to the FX2N or a DU Series unit and a
programming tool. However, only one programming tool can be connected at once.
Only one 422BD can be connected to a base unit. Also, the 422BD cannot be used together with the
FX2N-485-BD or the FX2N-232-BD.

5.1 General specification of RS422 interface PLC communication Board
General specifications are the same as those for the FX2N series programmable controller.


5.2 Power supply specification of RS422 interface PLC communication Board
The 422BD requires 60mA 5V DC supplied from the programmable controller.
The 5V DC power capacity of the programmable controller is 290 mA maximum. This is used by peripheral units and special function blocks as well as the 422BD. Make sure that the power capacity does not exceed this value. For the details, refer to the hardware manual.
For additional current consumption increases, refer to section 3.

Cautions for using Mitsubishi FX2N-422-BD
1) When using any 422BD, do not use any other communication format or parameters. If the communication format or parameters is set, programming is not possible.
2) Only one programming tool (such as FX-10P, FX-20P, etc.) should be connected to either the programming port or the port provided on the 422BD. If a programming tool is connected to both connectors, the following may occur.
a) The program inside the programmable controller may not be consistent with the program inside the programming tool. If the program is modified or the set value for timers or counters is modified, a part of the program may be damaged and the programmable controller may malfunction.
b) When the sampling trace function of the programmable controller is used from both ports, the correct sampling trace result cannot be obtained.

 

Diagnostics of Mitsubishi FX2N-422-BD
1) Make sure that the cable connected is correct.
2) Make sure that the programmable controller is connected, and that the POWER LED is on.
3) Make sure that the communication format is in the initial state (D8120 = K0). Check using a peripheral unit how the communication parameters are set. If the no protocol (RS instruction) or the dedicated protocol is selected, set the parameters correctly using the peripheral unit.
4) Make sure that the RS, VRRD or VRSC instruction or N:N network setting program is not used in the program. If such an instruction is used in the program, delete it, turn off the power of the programmable controller, then turn it on again.
5) If the special auxiliary relay M8070 or M8071 is turned on, turn off the relay using the peripheral unit, turn off the power of the programmable controller, then turn on the power again.

Mitsubishi FX2N-232-BD RS232 interface Board

Introduction to Mitsubishi FX2N-232-BD

 

The communication board FX2N-232-BD for RS232C (hereinafter referred to as “232BD”) can be connected to the main unit of the FX2N Series programmable controller, and used as the port for the following applications.
(1) To perform data transfer between RS232C devices such as personal computers, bar code readers and printers.
(2) To perform data transfer using the dedicated protocol between RS232C devices. For details of the dedicated protocol, refer to the users manual of the FX-485PC-IF.
(3) To connect a programming tool.
And when the 232BD is used for the application (1) or (2) above, the communication format including the baud rate, the parity and the data length is specified by the parameters or the contents of the special data register D8120 of the FX2N programmable controller.
Only one 232BD can be connected to one base unit. Accordingly, the 232BD cannot be used together with the FX2N-485-BD or the FX2N-422-BD. When two or more RS232C units are required to be connected for the application, use the special block for RS232C communication.

To send and receive the data between the RS232C unit using the 232BD, the communication format including the
transmission speed (baud rate) and the parity must be consistent between the 232BD and the RS232C unit.
The communication format can be set using parameters or the contents of special data register D8120 of the FX2N programmable controller. Make sure to set appropriately the communication format in accordance with the RS232C unit used. For the setting method using the parameters of the FX2N programmable controller, refer to the manual of the peripheral unit used.
Make sure to turn off the power of the programmable controller and turn it on again after modifying the setting.

WIRING of Mitsubishi FX2N-232-BD

To connect the 232BD to RS232C device use an RS232C cable. Make sure that the shield of cables is connected to
ground (100 W or less).
The connector of the 232BD is 9-pin D-SUB (see Section 1.2 and Chapter 2). The connections of RS232C devices
varies with each device being used. Check the specification of the device, and connect.

CAUTION for using Mitsubishi FX2N-232-BD

1) When programming tool is connected the 232BD, do not use any other communication format or parameters. If communication format or parameters is set, programming is not possible.
2) Only one programming tool (such as FX-10P, FX-20P, etc.) should be connected to either the programming port or the port provided on the 232BD. If a programming tool is connected to both connectors, the following may occur.
